Transforming the school greenhouse: Before and After Restoration

Lumber was reinforced or replaced, electrical components were upgraded, panels were replaced, and tropical plants were planted to teach students about tropical agriculture. In addition, students repaired a 40-year-old fish tank to be used in the production of tropical fish. The education opportunities afforded by the greenhouse have been extremely beneficial for many students since repairing the greenhouse in 2019.

Transformation Showcase: Before and After

The Impact of Restoration and the future of AGRICULTURE in Idaho

Restoration breathes new life into educational programs, preserving their legacy for future generations. At the Idaho FFA Foundation, we are committed to supporting Idaho agriculture educators as they inspire and educate.

With a shortage of students going on to study plant science, the aim is to create a pipeline of talent for Idaho’s agricultural-based businesses that many times have to recruit from outside of the state, only to lose these employees when jobs open closer to their original hometown.

“Idaho is a desert climate and has a short growing season. That desert climate consists of plants like sagebrush and knapweed, so when my FFA chapter found a way to bring something different to our town, we jumped at the chance. With our conservatory we are able to grow tropical plants like nothing any of us have ever seen before. Students of my FFA chapter are now able to study a different type of flora. Not only that, but we are also able to learn about plants with whole different needs and how to take care of them so that they grow. The conservatory has added a new learning experience to my school and has opened the minds of the students in the school, including my own.

The conservatory greenhouse has introduced me to a whole new world of plant science. I was able to plant the different flowers, trees, and fruits into the bed we built for them and then I was able to watch and study them as they grew. In doing this, I also learned how to take care of a greenhouse and how to construct beds for plants to root out in. I have been opened up to many opportunities in being involved in this greenhouse. All in all, being a part of this greenhouse has taught me so much and it has peaked my interest into furthering my studies in plant science throughout high school and college.”
